Direct dyes have affinity for cellulosic fibres and can be dyed directly without the assistance of a mordant. By far the largest number of direct dyes belongs to the azo group, mostly diazo or triazo compounds, with a small number of stilbene and phthalocyanine derivatives.
It is customary to designate the direct dyes as light-fast direct dyes which exhibit a light-fastness above "5" of the 1-8 scale, as direct copper dyes which can be improved in their fastness properties by an after-treatment which copper salt, and as direct diazo dyes which require an after-treatment of diazotizing and coupling to develop the colour for better fastness. There is a wide variation in the fastness properties of the direct dyes, of which the light-fast direct dyes and the direct copper dyes, as a rule, produce dyeings of better light fastness. A host of other direct dyes with inferior fastness properties can be improves in wet fastness by an aftertreatment with Fixhao AC powder or formaldehyde, etc. By virtue of their simple methods of application, wide range of colours, low prices, good level dyeing property and adaptability to the dyeing of various fibres, the direct dyes enjoy favourable reception far and wide.
- Fields of Application -
Direct dyes are suitable for the dyeing and printing of cotton, linen, natural silk, wool, viscose and cuprammonium rayon, polyamide fibres, etc. They can be applied either manually or mechanically. However, they find their main applicaiton in the dyeing and printing of cotton knit goods, corduroy, cotton yarn, silk, etc. They are likewise applicable for the dyeing of paper and leather. Certain members such as Congo red, etc, can be used as indicator.
- Water for Dyeing -
Soft water should be used for dyeing because hard water contains calcium, magnesium salts, etc. which will form precipitates with the dyestuffs, thus causing loss of colour yield and trouble of dye specks. In case only hard water available, it should be softened with a small amount of sodium carbonate, trisodium phosphate, etc before dyeing.
