Acid dyes cover a wide range of colours, yield bright shades and are combined with simple method of application. They can be directly dyed and printed in an acid solution, the dyeings of which produce full bright shades of good general fastness properties.
Acid chrome dyes, due to their characteristics of structure are capable of forming a metallic complex on the fibre. The dyed materials therefore possess many outstanding fastness properties especially to light, weathering, perspiration and milling. The dyeing method of these dyes is similar to that of acid dyes with the exception that in dyeing which acid chrome dyes, the materials should be mordanted with metal salts, usually with chromates such as potassium (sodium) bichromate.
Acid and acid chrome dyes are readily dissolved in water, possess good exhaustion properties and therefore are suitable for the dyeing and printing of loose wool, wool tops, woolen piece goods, woolen and carpet yarn, silk, polyamide fibres and their blends. They are applicable for open vat, jig, winch and circulating liquor dyeing. Acid and acid chrome dyes are also widely employed for the dyeing of leather, paper, jute, etc. Certain members find use in colouring cosmetics, soap, inks and varnishes. They are likewise applies for the preparation of colour lakes.
